Lounge Access for Arriving in Lh Business Class and Continuing on United Economy
Today we have a Reader Question I received last week concerning the Lufthansa Welcome Lounge at Frankfurt Airport and I promised the reader to write about this after visiting it next time.
I actually planned either way to stop by the Welcome Lounge this week following my arrival on Lufthansa from Bangkok so this was a good opportunity.
The Lufthansa Welcome Lounge is a facility the installed exclusive to Frankfurt Airport and It's located on the arrivals level of Terminal 1 (mid section).
It has been there for quite a few years now yet there are still many travelers who never heard of it and even more so are confused by the access rules.
David from Singapore had just this question about it saying he'd fly Economy Class and sometimes Premium Economy and how he could gain access.
You can access Lufthansa's landing page about the Welcome Lounge here.
First and Business Class passengers, status customers and United Airlines Global Services Card members can enjoy the use of this lounge daily from 05.00 to 13.00 hours (last admission at 12.30 hours), provided that they have arrived in Frankfurt on a selected flight.
The Welcome Lounge is located directly behind baggage reclaim in Arrivals Area B and extends over two floors. On the upper level, a cosy bistro area, a varied breakfast buffet, comfortable armchairs, a quiet zone and a smokers' room, work stations, washrooms and two showers ensure that you can relax after your flight. On the ground floor, there are a further 26 modern shower rooms to make a fresh start to your day a reality.
Any special requirements our guests may have are taken care of by the concierge at the bathroom area reception, which lounge guests can conveniently reach using either the lift or the stairs. Showers are allocated when you arrive at the lounge reception area.
For First Class passengers, HON Circle Members and Senators there is an exclusive ironing service available in the Welcome Lounge. Anyone who would like to have their shirt or blouse ironed can simply hang it on a clothes hanger in the cabinet above the washbasin prior to showering and they will get it back straight away.
What is confusing to many is the term "status customers" in the description and I feel Lufthansa needs to be more upfront here. In fact Star Alliance Gold customers don't have access to this lounge and that's an important thing to remark.
Here is a chart outlining the Lufthansa Lounge access rules:
You can see the chart is already quite confusing but there is more:
The following passengers also have access to the Lufthansa Welcome Lounge at Frankfurt Airport:
Passengers who arrive in Frankfurt via Dusseldorf or Munich after an intercontinental Lufthansa flight (in First or Business Class).
Passengers who arrive in Frankfurt via Zurich or Geneva after an intercontinental SWISS flight (in First or Business Class).
Intercontinental routes are flights with the flight numbers LH401-LH799 or from ALG, BEY, CMN, IST, KZN, LCA, TUN, ESB or DME.
So there are quite a few restrictions and exceptions involved. The basic rules however are that you need a Lufthansa Economy Ticket plus Lufthansa Miles&More Status (HON, SEN, FTL) or a standalone Premium Ticket in order to access.
United Global Services can also access in conjunction with a United flight arriving on the same day.
You shouldn't get too excited about the food in there though, it's some basic breakfast with rather strange hot dishes at times. Today they had some sort of Indian curries – for breakfast! I personally prefer a cold, simple selection in the mornings so what is on offer here is totally sufficient.
The big asset are the showers and the fact that there are a lot of them. I never had to wait to take a shower quite to the contrary if you visit a departure lounge.
The shower rooms are small but extremely clean and readily available. They feature L'Occitane shampoo products and individual small necessities available at the front desk.
For those without access to this lounge there is always the LuxxLounge (former Admirals Club) on the Mezzanine of Terminal 1. It's accessible via Priority Pass but there is an extra charge for the shower use now.
Conclusion
Even though I collected miles with United Mileage Plus for my Premium Economy flight BKK-FRA I entered the lounge by showing my Lufthansa Frequent Traveler card. I stopped collecting status miles with Lufthansa years ago and since dropped to FTL per their soft landing policy. It's nice to at least use it to access the Welcome Lounge when arriving before 12:30pm.
In the case of the reader who has Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Gold status this won't help him. I suggested to try and get the FTL card for 2 years (35k status miles in one calendar year is enough) just as an access pass. Or maybe upgrade to Business Class occasionally.
